CEW logo4.jpgThe Catholic Church in Scotland encourages schools, parishes and other agencies to work closely together in order to celebrate the distinctive purpose of Catholic education during one particular week each year.  The purpose of Catholic Education Week is to highlight the significance of education, not only for young people but for society as a whole.  Students, parents, teachers and others are asked to reflect on their own roles in the education process -  at home, in school, in the local parish and in other educational settings.

SCES provides support materials for schools and parishes to assist them in their own plans to draw attention to the added value which Catholic schools bring across Scotland. Promotional events, liturgical celebrations, particular classroom lessons and school activities will be encouraged in schools and parishes.

Catholic Education Week - Sunday 3rd to Saturday 9th February 2013

THEME: "Opening Hearts and Minds to God"

From 3rd to 9th February 2013 Scotland's Catholic schools and parishes will celebrate how they are engaged in the vital work of "Opening Hearts and Minds to God".  This theme for Catholic Education Week reflects one of the key aspects of faith which was emphasised by Pope Benedict XVI when he introduced the Church's Year of Faith:

“What the world is in particular need of today is the credible witness of people enlightened in mind and heart by the word of the Lord, and capable of opening the hearts and minds of many to the desire for God and for true life, life without end."  (Porta Fidei, #15)

The resources which have been supplied to schools and parishes will be used to prompt reflection by parents, teachers and clergy about the different roles they can play in helping children and young people to be "open" to the joy of faith in Jesus Christ.  In particular the 60,000 prayer cards which have been distributed to schools will help young people towards an extended and considered profession of the Nicene Creed within their school and parish communities at some point during the Year of Faith.

This year's Cardinal Winning Education Lecture will take place in the University of Glasgow on 15th June 2013 and will form part of a major launch event for the St. Andrew’s Foundation. Archbishop Gerhard Muller, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has agreed to give the lecture this year.  Details to follow.
